Myst
HistoryPersonally, I do not think Myst is as much a good game as a good method to demonstrate the abilities of the computer. Myst has the ability to dazzle an audience by the sheer power of its graphics and sound. Still after about two years, the game has the ability to hold our attention and return us to those times.

One of the reasons why I wanted to use it to help teachers overcome their computerphobia. It also uses wonderful physics, simple machines, and "problem-solving" (to use educationalese). >>My relationship with Myst is a love hate type, and I agree with your story observations.<< So is there any other "game" out there which will fill the bill? [Even as I am typing this, there is another news story about a child giving birth to a child and she lets the baby die. So what? She's probably been killing people for years on the video game/computer screen. There was no similar role model of love, compassion, and the value of life!] Back to the question at hand: I am looking for a game I can recommend to teachers (I coordinate vendor fairs held in conjunction with a couple of small science/math teacher conferences) which would do what Myst does, except without the extreme negatives.
